Overview

The Whole Family Book Festival is a representative reading culture festival of the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, held every autumn since 2013 at Jeongdok Library. It creates a space where families and neighbors can come together and connect with one another through books, and is designed to let people experience the joy and value of reading in everyday life through a variety of hands-on activities, performances, and exhibitions. In particular, it has grown into a collaborative festival by bringing together libraries and lifelong learning centers, local bookstores, school reading clubs, and other institutions to run programs in which citizens and students take part directly. A wide range of programs are offered — an awards ceremony for families who read together, cultural performances, creative hands-on activities linked to books, and eco-friendly and traditional culture experiences — so that people of all ages can enjoy it. It is a meaningful event that offers an opportunity to feel that reading is more than a simple activity, but a source of everyday joy and a value shared by the community.

Why go

This is Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education's long-running autumn reading festival, held at Jeongdok Library every year since 2013. It brings together families, neighbors, local bookstores, and school reading clubs for book-themed hands-on activities, performances, and an awards ceremony honoring families who read together, plus eco-friendly and traditional culture experiences.

Getting there from Seoul

Jeongdok Library sits in Hwa-dong, Jongno-gu, in the Bukchon area of central Seoul, so no intercity travel is needed. Take Seoul Subway Line 3 to Anguk Station and walk north through the Bukchon Hanok Village streets toward Bukchon-ro 5-gil; the venue is also reachable by local bus routes serving the Jongno-gu/Gyeongbokgung area.

Tips

  • This is a one-day event (7 November 2026), so check the time window in advance and arrive early since it runs outdoors in the library's garden.
  • Combine the visit with a stroll through nearby Bukchon Hanok Village, a short walk from the venue.
  • Dress for outdoor November weather in Seoul, as the main activities take place in the Outdoor Garden rather than indoors.

Best for: families, book lovers, Korean culture enthusiasts.

    Gyeongbokgung Starlight Night Tour

    Sep 2 – Oct 24, 2026

Gyeongbokgung Starlight Night Tour is a nighttime exploration program in which visitors tour the northern section of Gyeongbokgung Palace while experiencing royal court cuisine and traditional culture. Guided by expert commentary, participants move through various parts of the palace to learn about the life of the royal family during the Joseon Dynasty and the historical stories associated with Gyeongbokgung. At Oesojubang, the palace kitchen, visitors can experience a special 12-dish royal table setting—a modern reinterpretation of the Joseon-era royal court table (sura-sang)—served in the form of a 'doseulk' (traditional portable lunch box). This year, a special changgeuk (Korean traditional opera) performance depicting the king's story will be presented at Jipokjae, the study of King Gojong, offering a unique experience where the history of the space and the performance come together. Afterward, visitors can gaze at the starlight reflected in Hyangwonji Pond and enjoy an atmosphere quite different from daytime amid the tranquil scenery of Gyeongbokgung. At Gyeongbokgung's Starlight Night Tour, where the dining culture of the Joseon royal family found in royal court cuisine, historic spaces, beautiful night views, and traditional culture all come together, visitors can experience a special and warm night at the palace.
