    Dongdaemun Festival

    Oct 3, 2026

Under the theme 'A New Dash of Culture,' a 700-meter stretch of Janghan-ro transforms for a day into a car-free street of culture and art. With vehicle traffic restricted, performances, hands-on experiences, and citizen-participation programs take place throughout Janghan-ro, reinterpreting the road itself as a single festival space. Drawing on the historical significance of Janghan-ro—from Janghanpyeong, where cavalry horses once galloped during the Joseon dynasty, to its role as a hub of the modern automobile industry—the festival presents a new kind of dash that runs from 'horses' through 'automobiles' to 'culture.' This year in particular, the festival strengthens participatory programs that let citizens become the stars of the festival themselves, rather than simply watching performances. Making use of the spatial character of Janghan-ro, the entire street is turned into one giant festival ground through a unique roller rink and a 'My Car Becomes a Shop for a Day' program that uses citizens' own vehicles.
