Overview

The 25th Oeam Village Straw Culture Festival is a folk culture festival set against the backdrop of the 600-year-old traditional village of Oeam, where visitors can directly experience and enjoy straw, stone, and traditional living culture. It will be held from October 16 to 18, 2026, in and around Oeam Village and the Jeotjatgeori marketplace area, featuring a variety of programs including a national straw craft competition, straw craft exhibitions and experiences, thatched-roof (choga ieong) tying, a straw-weaving competition, scarecrow making, a straw playground and folk games field, 'companion stone' (banryeodol) making, and hanok and stone-wall path tours. Visitors can also encounter traditional culture through the National Nongak (Farmers' Music) Festival, traditional culture performances, reenactments of traditional weddings, funeral rites, and bulcheonwi ancestral memorial rites, as well as the historical exam experience program 'Onyang Byeolsi' and the 'Samil Yuga' procession. Folk experiences are also arranged, such as a special exhibition at Geonjae Gotaek, hanbok, hanji, and straw craft experiences, and rice-cake pounding (tteokmechigi) and gangjeong making. In addition, a local food and flea market and a food market will be run, and an opening ceremony celebration performance and a drone light show will also take place.

Why go

The 25th Oeam Village Straw Culture Festival brings traditional straw and stone crafts to life in a 600-year-old folk village, with a national straw craft competition, thatched-roof tying, and farmers' music performances. Reenactments of traditional weddings and ancestral rites, plus an opening-night drone light show, add extra spectacle from October 16-18, 2026.

Getting there from Seoul

Take a KTX or SRT high-speed train from Seoul to Asan Station (roughly 30-45 minutes), then a taxi or local bus into Songak-myeon to reach Oeam Village. Alternatively, Seoul subway Line 1 runs directly to Onyang Oncheon Station, from which it's a short taxi ride to the village; total travel time from central Seoul is about 1-1.5 hours either way.

Tips

  • Arrive in the late afternoon or evening to catch the opening ceremony performance and drone light show.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes, as the hanok and stone-wall path tours cover uneven traditional village terrain.
  • Try hands-on experiences like straw weaving, hanbok, or hanji craft early in the day before queues build up.

Best for: families, history buffs, photographers, culture enthusiasts.
