Mokpo National Heritage Night Walk
Oct 30 – Nov 1, 2026 · Gwangju & Jeollanam-do

Overview
The '2026 Mokpo National Heritage Night Walk' is a nighttime cultural heritage event hosted and organized by Mokpo City, with support from the Korea Heritage Service and Jeonnam-Gwangju Unified Special City. Held over three days from October 30 to November 1, 2026, in and around the Mokpo Modern History and Culture Space, it is a cultural program designed to let visitors experience Mokpo's modern history and national heritage at night. With the subtitle 'Modern Times, the Story of Mokpo's Port Opening 129,' the event focuses on the opening of the port of Mokpo—the first port city independently opened by the Korean Empire in 1897—and the process of its formation as a modern city. Key cultural heritage sites include historic locations and architectural heritage such as Modern History Museum Hall 1, Modern History Museum Hall 2, Simsang Elementary School, Gyeongdong Catholic Church, and the site of Mokpojin Garrison. The event program consists of viewing and hands-on activities linking the nighttime scenery with cultural heritage, traditional culture performances, and other performances, conveying to visitors the historical value of Mokpo's port-opening history and modern cultural heritage.
Why go
This three-day nighttime event turns Mokpo's cluster of early 20th-century heritage buildings into an after-dark walking experience, marking the 129th anniversary of Mokpo's 1897 port opening. Visitors can view illuminated historic sites such as the Modern History Museum Halls, Simsang Elementary School, Gyeongdong Catholic Church, and the former Mokpojin Garrison site while taking in traditional culture performances along the route.
Getting there from Seoul
Take the KTX from Seoul Station (or Yongsan) directly to Mokpo Station, a journey of roughly 3 hours. Express or intercity buses to Mokpo Bus Terminal from Seoul's Central City/Gangnam terminal are also an option, though slower than KTX. From Mokpo Station or the bus terminal, the Mokpo Modern History and Culture Space is reachable by a short local bus ride or taxi.
Tips
- Wear comfortable walking shoes, as the event moves between several historic sites on foot after dark.
- It only runs for three days (30 October–1 November 2026), so confirm the exact nightly program and timing locally before you go.
- Visit the Modern History Museum halls in daylight beforehand to get fuller historical context for what you see on the night walk.
Best for: history enthusiasts, photographers, walking tours, culture travellers.
