Coal Mining Culture Festival
Oct 7 – Oct 10, 2026 · Gangwon

Overview
Now in its 1st year, the '2026 Coal Mining Culture Festival' is a multidisciplinary cultural festival held throughout Sabuk-eup, Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon State, to celebrate the opening of the M650 Museum. The festival presents the lives of the miners who once led South Korea's industrialization, along with the history of coal mining, through contemporary cultural and artistic programs. The main components of the event are a large-scale thematic performance based on the miners' stories and a joint program involving 7 cities and counties in the coal industry transition region. In addition, audience-participation experience programs that introduce the history of coal mining will be operated alongside these. The festival grounds are centered around the newly opening M650 Museum, Ppuri Hall, and the area around 650-gil, with a variety of performances and cultural events tailored to the character of each zone. The event presents visitors with the historical background of the Sabuk area reshaped into cultural content.
Why go
This inaugural festival (October 7-10, 2026) marks the opening of the M650 Museum in Sabuk-eup and tells the story of the miners who powered South Korea's industrialization through performances and interactive exhibits. A large-scale thematic stage show based on miners' real stories anchors the event, alongside a joint program bringing together seven coal-region cities and counties. It's a rare chance to see Korea's industrial heritage reframed as contemporary art rather than a static museum display.
Getting there from Seoul
Sabuk-eup sits in Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon State, in Korea's old coal-mining belt near Taebaek. From Seoul, take a Mugunghwa or ITX train from Cheongnyangni Station on the Taebaek (Yeongdong) Line toward Taebaek/Sabuk, a journey of roughly four hours. Intercity buses to Jeongseon or Taebaek from Dong Seoul Bus Terminal are an alternative, with a short local transfer needed to reach Sabuk-eup itself.
Tips
- Festival activities are spread across several zones (the new M650 Museum, Ppuri Hall, and the 650-gil area), so plan to walk between sites.
- Gangwon's mountain towns turn cool in October evenings, so bring a layer even if the day starts mild.
- As a first-year event, arrive with some flexibility since schedules and signage for a brand-new festival may still be settling in.
Best for: history buffs, families, culture and arts enthusiasts.

Taebaek Festival
Oct 3 – Oct 4, 2026
The 45th Taebaek Festival is a citizen-participation festival held for two days, from October 2 to October 3, 2026, in the area around Taebaek City Hall. The slogan is 'Taebaek Citizens' Grand Festival of Coexistence and Harmony,' and the event is hosted and organized by the Taebaek City Cultural Foundation, with sponsorship from Taebaek City, the Taebaek City Council, and Kangwon Land Inc. The festival opens Taebaek City Hall as a citizen-centered space for communication and is designed with programs spanning all generations so that citizens can participate together and enjoy themselves. Major programs include a recreational competition among 8 dong (neighborhoods), a special concert inviting Taebaek citizens, the Taebaek Hand-Made Taste Master Competition, the Taebaek Highland Kimjang (Kimchi-Making) Experience, the Taebaek Song Festival, and the Resident Self-Governance Competition. Alongside these, the festival runs a variety of ongoing programs such as a photo exhibition and photo zones depicting Taebaek's history, the Taebaek Oxygen Healing Zone, family experience programs, and promotional booths from related organizations. Also, to mark Gaecheonjeol (National Foundation Day), the festival holds traditional ancestral rites together — a mountain spirit ritual (Sansinje) at Jedanggol and a Dangun ritual (Dangunje) at Dangun Seongjeon — to pray for the region's peace and prosperity.
